CARDIFF to KURRI KURRI to MAITLAND RAIL LINK PROPOSAL

The Cardiff - Kurri Kurri - Maitland rail link proposal represents an important opportunity to provide a sustainable long term transport infrastructure for the Lower Hunter. It would follow existing rail lines and corridors established to service coal mines. The following benefits would result:

  • Providing a much greater proportion of the population with a viable rail service, especially proposed new residential areas to the west of Newcastle.
  • Supporting the Newcastle Central Business district by increasing its regional accessibility and focus, thereby reducing urban sprawl pressures.
  • Providing a significant alternative freight link especially for long term Sydney - Brisbane freight movement, and notably a flood free connection between Newcastle and Maitland.
  • Provide long term employment opportunities for the Hunter region involving raising skills in heavy and light manufacturing resulting in growth in apprenticeships and vocational training.

This proposal is an environmentally desirable infrastructure development which would force a rethink of present urban development strategies which are totally car dependent.
