Maitland Greens were formed in 1993 to contest the 1995 State and Local Government elections, and entered the Maitland political scene which was finely balanced between Labor and Liberal.

Maitland Greens have contested all elections since 1995, and were lucky enough to be successful in 2004 to have Wendy White elected as a West Ward Councillor. Our luck did not hold in the following Local Government election in 2008, and despite increasing our vote by over 4%, we lost Wendy from the Council.

Over the years we have had candidates for Paterson, in the Lower House Federal campaign, as well as for Maitland in the Legislative Assembly in NSW in State elections.

As expected, the Liberal Robyn Parker was elected for Maitland, and now holds the post of Minister for the Environment for NSW, although this role has been diminished as the Premier Barry O'Farrell has oversight of this and other Ministries. Robyn Parker's role has seen her having to take responsibility for the proposed 'Hunting in National Parks' issue, as well as having to answer for the EPA's role in the Orica chemical spill issue.

The latest Local Government election in September 2012 resulted in a swing to the conservatives, and saw Greens vote at 10% in West and Central Wards, and nearly 9% in East and North wards.

In the latest Federal election in September 2013, our Lower House candidate for Paterson, our own John Brown achieved a swing to the Greens of over .6%, a great effort considering the conservative nature of the vote Australia wide.

The seat of Hunter takes in much of Maitland, and there was a predictable swing against Greens as the sitting member was a Minister in the Rudd Government.

Our present Office Bearers are: John Brown Convenor; Secretary Wendy White; Treasurer Marg Edwards and Membership Jan Davis.
